Nasori (Nishinomiya-Shrine)

On May 3, 2026, I performed the sacred dance “Nasori” at Nishinomiya Shrine. I was originally planning to perform with a mask, but due to sudden rain, I decided to perform without it. This was partly to protect the mask from getting wet, but also because rainy weather meant performing on the elevated main hall stage, where wearing a mask could be dangerous if someone slipped. So, I performed unmasked.

Nasori is a bugaku dance said to portray a male and female blue dragon descending to the Imperial Court and dancing in celebration of the Emperor’s long and auspicious reign.

The dance was originally performed by two dancers; the solo version is known as Rakuson.

Rakuson belongs to the category of bugaku known as hashirimono (“running dances”), distinguished by their energetic movements and vigorous use of the stage.
